bullet  General Notes:

John Meehan (1831-1912) and Catherine Garney (1839-1914) were married in Davenport, Iowa at St. Anthony's Church on January 18, 1864. They made their home in Milan, Illinois where nine of their thirteen children were born; two died in infancy.

In 1878 they brought their family to Crawford County and settled on a farm in Hayes Township. Later they bought a farm in Hanover Township and raised their family in the Denison area. Four more children arrived to join the family. One died in infancy, leaving a family of ten to become citizens of Crawford County and add to its growth.

Thomas, the oldest boy, found himself in a German speaking community and immedi-ately decided to learn to speak and read the German language. He was a lifelong subscri-ber to a German newspaper published in Denison. In later years, when he ran for county assessor, he became known as "Dutch Tom" to distinguish him from Tom Meehan, the Sheriff of Crawford County.

On February 2, 1898, Thomas (1866-1928) married Catherine Lally, daughter of Frank and Jane Lally, old time residents of Hayes Township. They became the parents of Francis, John, Evelyn, James and Joseph (twins), Thomas, Floyd and Vincent. They farmed in Hayes Township until retirement.

On April 13, 1928, Thomas died of a heart attack in the midst of one of Iowa's worst spring blizzards. At the time of his death, the country was going into one of its great depressions. Banks were closing, farm prices were down, land values, that had risen after the first World War, were falling.

Mr. Meehan had purchased additional land to keep his boys on the land. He left them with a large debt. On the advice of their uncle, Dr. J.J. Meehan of Denison, the family formed one of the first farm corporations in the county. It proved successful for the family. When it was dissolved in December, 1951, each family was able to be an indepen-dent farmer.

John and Catherine's other children: Margaret Meehan (1867-1947), who had kept house at the jail for Sheriff Tom Meehan, a cousin, was married November 25, 1908 to Martin Conway of Aledo, Illinois. They had two sons, Robert (1913-1966) and James, who died while very young.

Bridget (1869-1910) grew up in the Denison area. Because of poor health she remained at home with her mother until her death in 1910.

Ann Meehan (1871-1950) was a teacher in the rural schools until her marriage to John Houlihan, a Denison native, on January 12, 1898. John was a trader of land and horses. It has been said the family were never sure where they would be living the next year or what team they would be driving next week. He usually made a good deal for all. They were the parents of Vincent (1900-1946), a lawyer at Harvard, Illinois; Helen (Mrs. George Huffmann); Berniece (Mrs. Clair Barnes); Louis and Paul. They all grew up and were educated in the Denison area.

Joseph (1875-1932) and Elizabeth (1875-1921) were twins. He became a doctor with a practice in Denison and she a nurse employed by the Drs. Mayo of Rochester, Minnesota and later in Denison where she joined her twin brother in establishing a hospital.

John Meehan (1877-1929), better known as Jack to his friends and relatives, married Minnie Malloy of Davenport, Iowa. He worked in Davenport for a number of years, but finally came back to Denison where they made their home until his death. They were the parents of three daughters, Mary Cath-erine (Mrs. J. White), deceased; Elizabeth Ann (Mrs. James Houldsworth) of Rolling Meadows, Illinois, and Margaret Rita (Mrs. William Mueller) of Atlanta, Georgia.

Mary Meehan (1879-1918) married Edward Champion, October 3, 1906. They were the parents of Emmett and Joseph, both deceased, who grew up and were educated in the Denison Schools. Mary died January 18, 1918.

Pearl (1883-1957) was married in 1920 to Ed Champion several years after her sister Mary's death. To them were born twins who died shortly after birth; a son, Thomas of Waukon, Iowa, and a daughter, Margaret Mary (Mrs. Frank Kudlacek) who died in 1979. Ed Champion served the community as Justice of the Peace for many years.
Cecilia, the youngest (1885-1910) was born and grew up in the Denison area. She was a teacher in the rural schools of the county. She died of pneumonia.

Few of the descendants of this large family remain in the county. Many of their children and grandchildren are no longer living. But in a small way each has contributed some-thing that has endeared him to all who knew HIM. John and Catherine can rest eternally knowing their children have helped to build a better community.

Obituary
In last week's issue of the Review mention was made of the death of John Meehan, Sr, which occurred on July 23, 1912. Further reference to the life of the deceased was promised in this issue of the paper.
Mr Meehan was born near Kilkee, County of Clarie, Ireland, in 1832, being therefore 80 years of age at the time of his death. He came to the United States when sixteen years of age and located at Rock Island, Ill, where he grew to mature manhood. He was married January 18, 1864, to Catherine Garvey, of Davenport, Iowa. Thirteen children were born to this union, three of whom died in infancy. two daughter, Bridget and Dymple, died within the last three years, both of whom had grown to womanhood. Other children are: Thomas Meehan, of Vail, Iowa; Mrs M W Conway, of Reynolds, Ill; Mrs J A Houlihan, Mrs E L Champion, Dr J J Meehan and Elizabeth, John and Pearl, all of Denison.
In 1877 the deceased moved to Crawford county, Iowa, and located on a farm in Hayes township, where he lived for about five years. From the farm in Hayes township he afterwards moved to a farm west of Denison, where he lived until 1905, since which date he has resided in Denison, where his death occurred. For some time before his death he had been in feeble health and this condition with old age as a factor, doubtless caused his death.
The funeral service wee held at St Rose of Lima church on Thursday, July 25, at 10 o'clock, Father Farrely officiating, after which the body was taken to the Catholic cemetery for burial.
The pall bearers were: James Welch, Frank Lally, M Giblin, M L Houilhan, Sr, Thomas McGrinn and James McGuire. Those out of town attending the funeral were: Mr and Mrs W Conoway, of Reynolds, Ill; Joe Meehan, Alido, Il; John Mack, Veila, Ill; Mrs Thomas Barnes and Mrs M J Hoarn, Premption, Ill; Mrs C F O'Brien and Miss Nona O'Brien, Davenport, Iowa, and Mr and Mrs Fred Anthony, of Randolph, Iowa; Mrs Sashville and daughter, of Moline, Ill; Mr George Lally and Thos Lally, of Atlantic, Iowa.
Mr Meehan, during his long life, enjoyed the respect and good will of everyone who knew him. He was a splendid type of citizen, his influence being always in favor of the right. The Review joins his many friends in extending sympathy to the bereaved family.
