Peter J. and Ellen (Meehan) Lally moved from Hayes Township to a 240-acre farm northwest of Manilla in 1918. Their six children Adrian, Leone, Francis, Claire, LuVerne, and Lucille all attended Sacred Heart Grade School and graduated from Manilla High.
Lucille remembers riding into school each day in a horse-drawn buggy. Francis would take the team to Scanlon's bam while they were in class. Doc Hennessey's garage is probably sitting where that barn was, today. It was 1929, with only the last two girls still in high school, before the family had a car to drive them back and forth to town.
In 1932 or 1933, Pete and Nell (Ellen)moved into town. They rented the Buffington house, 2 doors west of the Methodist Church. Adrian and his wife Helen (McCann) remained on the farm until the early 1940's, when they moved to Dunlap. The farm was rented for a time to Francis & Esther McSorley, and finally sold - 80 acres to Junior Carstens, and the rest to Tony Arkfeld. Tony's daughter, Grace, and her husband, Ellsworth Schechinger, are on the farm today.
The Lallys later bought the Ryan home, 1 block north of Main St. Nell died in 1947, Pete died in 1953. LuVerne continued living in the house until it was sold in 1973 to Lyle and Eunice Mansfield. The house has been razed. The lot is between the homes of Myrtle Meyer and Madonna Schweiso.
Adrian, Francis and LuVerne are deceased; Leone Essex lives in San Jose, Calif.; Claire Kineen lives in Tracy, Calif.; and Lucille Rowan died in 2003.
