bullet  General Notes:

MARGARET, the seventh child, was born in 1839 and married James Hamilton on 3 Nov 1857 in St. Bartholomew's Church, Guelph. Their attendants were John Cullen and Mary Lynch. James was the son of James Hamilton and Mary Keage (Kane or Keigh) and was born 17 Oct 1833. He was baptized two days later and his sponsors were Mr. and Mrs. John McNulty. Since James had stayed home to help his mother operate their tavern, this is where he brought his bride, Margaret, after their marriage. They had nine children - James, Ann, Francis, Sarah, William Martin, Mary, Margaret, Elizabeth and John Joseph. James received the clear title for the 58 acres on 31 Dec 1875. On 21 Feb 1884, James Hamilton, "being in ill health and of sound and disposing mind and memory" made his last will and testament. In it he bequeathed $1000 each to his wife, Margaret, and sons Francis, William and John Joseph. Each of his five daughters would inherit $100. To his oldest son, James, he bequeathed the remainder of his estate, subject to a few reservations. James was to build a brick house 24 feet by 24 feet on one acre on the top of the hill up the side road where Margaret and the rest of the family would live. James had to furnish the new home and provide his mother, brothers and sisters with the necessary provisions. Since James was suffering from consumption, he believed that he would die before his wife and that is the reason his will was so explicit concerning his wife's existence after he was gone. However, Margaret died suddenly of paralysis in Apr 1884 less than two months after James made his will. In addition to her family, William Clair and Lawrence McNulty were witnesses to her death. She was buried 16 Apr in Block B Section 16 Grave 15 St. Joseph's Cemetery. On 7 June 1885, James added a codicil to his will cancelling all the portions pertaining to his late wife and ordering his son, James, to provide all support and maintenance for his brothers and sisters. James Sr. died from consumption on 27 June 1885 and was buried two days later beside his wife in Grave 14. Ironically, James Jr. outlived his father by only three years dying at the age of 30. The second son, Francis, was already married and living away from home and that is the reason William took over the business. In 1897, William Clair, one of the executors, was released from any liability to pay legacies from James Hamilton's estate.
