bullet  General Notes:

Leo Michael was James and Sarah’s first child born July 26th, 1892. He was named after the current pope - Leo XIII and Michael after James’ father. He was baptized July 31st, 1892 in The Church of Our Lady, Guelph, Ontario, Canada and the sponsors were his uncle, John Doyle and his aunt, Katherine Lynch. After leaving school, one of is jobs was with the Guelph Police Department. That did not last after he reported off sick for a shift only to have his picture in the Guelph Mercury the next day as one of the guests at a dance the previous evening. On September 20th, 1915, in The Church of Our Lady at six in the morning, Leo married Maude McGill. Maude was the daughter of George McGill and Mary Cassin, also of Puslinch Township. Maude’s Bridesmaid was her cousin, Eva Moran and Leo’s brother, Thomas, was groomsman. The bride wore a plum colored chiffon velvet suit trimmed with American marten fur harmonized with a very large hat of plum color velvet and she wore Leo’s gift - a dainty pendant of pearls. After a wedding breakfast, the newlyweds left on the morning train for Detroit, Indianapolis and Kansas City. At the conclusion of their honeymoon, they took up residence in Detroit where their only child - Leo Joseph (Ted) was born on July 6th 1916.

I never know Uncle Leo that well, but I always remember stories of how he smuggled my mother (Marguerite Mary Doyle Meehan) into the United States in 1922. My mother was nine at the time and she and my grandparents were moving to Detroit. Somewhere along the way, they lost my mother’s papers and when they got to the border, Uncle Leo told the border guards that my mom was his daughter. At the time they did not question it and my mom crossed over into the United States of America. In 1950, my dad, who was still in the Army was reassigned to the Seventh Army in Stuttgart, Germany.

At this point, the lack of papers became a real problem for my mom. After several weeks, the Canadian Government issued her a passport. My sister (Maureen) and I were given a separate passport from the government of the United States of American. My mother became an US Citizen in 1955.

Leo Michael died of a heart condition on October 7th, 1959 at the age of 67 and was buried on the 10th I Holy Sepulchre, Southfield, MI, in section16/343/4. Maude, who was living at 8647 Rutland when Leo died moved in with Ted and Ona. She was a widow for sixteen years dying on June 28th 1975 and was buried next to her husband at Holy Sepulchre, in section16/343/5.
