bullet  General Notes:

The thirteenth child born to M.P. and Catherine was a daughter, Ellen Marie (Helen), on November 17, 1883. She was probably a tiny, sickly baby as she was baptized the next day by Father Dumortier in The Church of Our Lady, her sponsors being Michael and Mary Ann Lynch. She made her First Communion on 18 Jun 1893 and was confirmed in June of 1894. She passed her entrance examination in 1897 and the public school leaving in 1898. With her sister, Annie, she went to the Convent Monday September 4, 1899 and stayed until April 13, 1900.

She spent a year in Kings Mills looking after Joseph, when he was managing the General Store there for M.P. No more is known of her education, but it seems that she stayed home to care for her aging parents. From what can be deduced from her writings, she absolutely worshipped her father. The story goes that M.P. was kind and interested in his granddaughter, Ellen Sullivan, when she was visiting at Borris, and Ellen was very upset and jealous. Her diary writings when M.P. died reveals utter adulation for him. After the loss of her "Dear, darling father", she transferred her adoration to her brother Thomas, and enjoyed being seen with him. When he started to take out his future bride, Helen was demoted to the back seat of the car which displeased her greatly. After Tom and Ina's marriage, in 1918, Helen moved to Toronto where she began a career in nursing which lasted all her life.

Around 1950, she bought a big home, at 654 Hamilton Street in Preston, which she converted to a nursing home for several patients. In the early 1960's she retired, sold the nursing home and moved to 954 Ottawa Street, Apt #1 in Windsor. She never married. She died there on 19 Feb 1974 in her 92nd year. A funeral service was held in Windsor, then her remains were brought to Guelph for a Requiem High Mass and interment in M.P.'s plot, Block C, Section 31, Grave 25, St. Joseph's Cemetery.
